Artist Statement

Every new dawn is an opportunity. Some are far more potent and important than others. The figure on this work points to the spot on the horizon where the sun will rise the day after the 2023 Referendum to amend the Australian Constitution to acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander as the first peoples of this country and deliver them a Voice. Let us all as Australians acknowledge our history and heal our country so we can move forward together as one people with one sky, one land, one sea.

D is for the day of that new dawn.

A is for Azimuth, the angle of the sunrise from North.

T is for the exact time of the sun rising over the horizon.

E is for the elevation of this site from the sea.

The sun will rise.

But it was not to be on that day….
