‘Carpe Diem’

Cast bronze 2019

Artist's statement:

The process of sculpture has a unique appeal and I am constantly looking for a simplicity in the sculpted figure, one that rejects historical stereotype, retains fundamental beauty and explores contemporary ideologies. Traditionally, the long poses required for sculpture using live models (many days of work holding the same pose) the gesture can tend towards the soporific, supported and languid. This in part abets the portrayal of the female form as synonymous with vulnerability, possession, maternity and defencelessness. To me this reinforces an outmoded, limited and stereotypical narrative.

In developing techniques to counter this and capture active poses, the current phase of my sculptural works explores figurative expressions of individuality, the discovery of inner strength and emotional resolve within the journey of life. ‘Carpe Diem’ is one of the feminine forms of these ideas. It is both grounded and aspiring in its gesture. Coiled within the piece – an imminent, considered surge of movement.

‘Carpe Diem’

Fate may be thrust upon us,

But not our destiny.

Our destiny we forge ourselves.

Carpe Diem.
